High-capacity power cables reduce transmission losses and minimize land use

Aging electrical grids, slated for renovation to address exploding electricity demand by datacenters globally, will push for higher cable specifications

Currently in demonstration programs (in urban areas constrained by space), the high-temperature superconductor (HTS) wire could be the optimal answer to grid constraints

The HTS, made of layers of superconducting ceramic materials (cooled at cryogenic temperature) around a metal substrate, is a specialized electrical conductor that carries massive electrical currents with zero resistance, eliminating energy loss as heat, unlike copper wires

The H in HTS is relative - superconductivity requires very low temperature (-200°C), achieved using a cryogenic envelope – a thermally-insulated jacket that surrounds the cable

Volume manufacturing capacity to reduce costs and long-term reliability of the cables will have the potential to generate large scale commercial adoption  in the coming years

The specialized companies of the theme must have the capacity to build up volume manufacturing

US-based Amphenol (market cap - $170 billion), Japanese Sumitomo Electric ($32 billion) and Italian Prysmian ($29 billion) stand out but smaller Furukawa and Nexans are recognized specialists as well

Market volatility will offer investment opportunities

Momentum highlights the trend of the average price computed over a week, compared to the monthly price average, and is indicative of the sector's resilience

Share performances can be ranked by selected time frame, from 2 weeks to one year (default), by selection  in the top-right menu
