The top Dutch companies listed - and actively traded - on the US markets are noteworthy by their diversity , covering a broad economic spectrum from technology to industrial goods

Significantly, these firms are often leaders in their sector

  • a very strong presence in the semiconductor industry - with , and
  • innovative enterprise - in fintech or in chemistry
  • rooted in Dutch geography - with energy storage
  • and solid tradition, delivering reliable performance - with beer or in publications

Still...

Overweight in semiconductor equipment manufacturer ASML - at more than $260 billion - highlights the relative modesty of many listed Dutch firms with clear international standing (and ambition)

Two true heavyweights renounced their Dutch identity by simplifying dual parent company structures and forgoing the original dual-listings with the London exchange

  • Oil and gas giant Shell, market cap $220 billion, abdicated its 'Koninklijke' coat of arms along with the 'Royal Dutch' moniker, somehow diminished as
  • Consumer goods Unilever, market cap $118 billion, with impeccable dual-national pedigree, justified its decision by the good corporate housekeeping; whether the share price, down 15% since the formal announcement in 2018, reflects any shareholder afterthought is unclear -

Both companies are listed in Amsterdam under their new identities - UNA for Unilever.plc and SHELL for Shell.plc

Putting it all together, commercial reality remains unchanged and the Dutch economy is deeply integrated in global trade flows

  • exports of goods and services are 83% of GDP
  • imports of goods and services are 72.8% leading to a positive trade balance
