While insurance has a record of reliable performance in the finance industry, the track record of the ETFs  in our theme reflects the catastrophe-prone year 2017

Market cap weighted iShares is diversified in property and casualty (app. 46%), life (app. 31%) and multiline (app. 16%), with the top listed firms accounting for the majority of the fund’s assets

Modified equal weighted SPDR includes all segments of the insurance industry : property and casualty (app. 40%), life & health (app. 25%), as well as multiline, reinsurance, and brokerage

Modified equal weighted PowerShares is invested exclusively in property and casualty – which tend to be short-term and less risky than longer term contracts (such as life or long-term care) – and would benefit from short term rising interest rates

Along with 2 Financials ETFs, exposed to both the insurance and the real estate sectors – with weights of respectively 14% and 18% for iShares U.S. Financials ETF and 23% and 17% for First Trust Financials AlphaDEX Fund – the group performance is middling but volatility remains markedly low
